Experience the Great Wildebeest Migration
The Great Migration is one of the most extraordinary wildlife
events on Earth. Every year, vast herds of wildebeest, accompanied
by zebras and gazelles, move through the Serengeti ecosystem and
into Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing and water.
The migration follows seasonal rainfall rather than a fixed
calendar. Calving generally takes place in the southern Serengeti
and Ndutu area around January to March. During the middle months
of the year, herds move through the western and central regions
towards the north. River crossings may occur in the northern
Serengeti, particularly around the Mara River.
Each season offers a different experience, making the Serengeti
a rewarding destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
Migration movements and river crossings are influenced by rainfall
and cannot be guaranteed on specific dates.
Best Time to Visit Serengeti
Serengeti is a year-round safari destination. The best time to
visit depends on the wildlife experiences and migration areas
you would most like to explore.
January – March
Calving Season
The southern plains and Ndutu area are important calving
grounds, where thousands of wildebeest calves are born.
Predator activity can also be particularly interesting.
April – May
Green Season
Seasonal rains transform the landscape into lush green plains.
This period can offer beautiful scenery, fewer visitors in
some areas and excellent photographic opportunities.
June – July
Western Corridor
Migration herds often move towards the western Serengeti.
The Grumeti River area may offer opportunities to observe
wildlife gathering around river crossings.
August – October
Northern Serengeti
The northern region is a popular area for following migration
herds. Mara River crossings may take place, although timing
and locations vary from year to year.
November – December
Return to the Southern Plains
As seasonal rains arrive, herds begin moving south through
the Serengeti. This is a rewarding time for scenic game
drives and following the migration.
