The Northern Circuit is the longest established trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro and offers an extraordinary journey around almost the entire mountain. Beginning on the western side through the Lemosho approach, the route crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau before turning north towards the remote wilderness of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes.

Unlike some of the busier trekking routes, the Northern Circuit offers a quieter mountain experience, with spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes and opportunities to appreciate the mountain’s diverse natural environments.

Throughout the climb, you will pass through tropical rainforest, heathland, moorland, alpine desert, and high-altitude terrain. The route provides several opportunities to climb higher during the day and sleep at a lower elevation, helping your body adjust to the changing altitude.

The final ascent takes you towards Gilman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres above sea level.
